Introduction to the Chakra System

Though there are a number of energy centers in the Chakra System, for the purpose of this post, we will briefly discuss the first seven Chakra points. The first seven Chakras are known as the Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown energy centers. These particular energy centers are the most well known and widely taught.

What Are Chakras?

Chakras are the seven main energy centers of the body. In Sanskrit, the word Chakras means wheel, and as such, in essence they are colorful spinning “wheels” of energy. Although they all work together, each one has their own function. When they are all in balance, we will have a general well-being with respect to our physical, mental, and emotional health.

What Happens When Chakras Are Out of Balance?

These energy centers, when out of balance, can have negative impacts on how we interact with, or manage, our environment and those around us. An imbalance can also be the cause of, or a contributing factor to chronic diseases, unpleasant “episodes,” or maladies inflicted on those who are generally in good health.

The Chakra Points

The first energy center is the Root Chakra, this point is located at the base of the spine. It is connected to our very foundation and the feeling of being grounded. It is associated with the color red.

Second, we have the Sacral, which is about three inches above the first. It affects our ability to accept others and new experiences. It holds our basic needs of creativity, sexuality, and self worth.

The third energy center is the Solar Plexus, which located in the upper area of our stomach at the tip of the sternum. It is the seat of our personal power. It is where our confidence, passions, anger, strength, ego and impulses all reside.

The fourth point in the Chakra System is the Heart, our seat of love. Our emotional well-being sits here. It is where our compassion resides, but it is also where obsession is born when out of balance. Our ability to love is controlled here (that is loving others as well as loving ourselves).

The fifth wheel of energy is the Throat, like the Heart Chakra, the location is pretty much where you would expect it to be. This is where our voice is. It controls what boundaries we set, and how we communicate with other people. It is a place where transformation, change and healing can be expressed from.

The sixth Chakra point is the Third Eye. The Third Eye allows us focus and to see the bigger picture. It is where our psychic ability and intuition are born. It’s location is the on forehead between the eyes/eyebrows. This particular point is sometimes referred to as the pineal gland.

The seventh wheel of energy is the Crown Chakra, it is located at the top of the head, and is where we connect with the cosmos. It is where the universal light flows in and where it is directed down through your other six Chakras. To put it in perspective, it is the center of one’s spirituality.

Below is an all chakra balancing sound meditation by Taos Winds Spirit Music. We strongly recommend doing this when you know for certain that you will not be disturbed, ideally this meditation would be done just before you go to sleep.
